Long Greenside Bunker Shot with Pitching Wedge

Good morning, Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf at the Cimarron Golf Resort, Palm Springs, California. Today I find myself in a green side bunker about 35 yards from the pin.

Normally when I end up in a green side bunker, I will use my 60-degree or maybe 56-degree wedge. But this is a much longer shot. So, what club shall I use? I could swing harder or put the ball back in my stance. But in this case, I think the best option is the simple option. I am going to use my pitching wedge. I will hit a normal blast shot with a couple of changes. The ball is towards the middle of my stance, my hands ahead of the ball. My weight is more on the left side. Finally, I will open the club up so it can slide through the sand rather than dig into it. Now I can hit a blast shot from the sand and because I am using my pitching wedge the shot is going to make it to the green, next to the pin.

PGA Instructor Mike Cahill and PGA Master Instructor Dave Cahill are here to help you play better and enjoy the game more. To learn more about sand shots please come see us in Palm Springs for golf lessons or visit us for a Palm Springs Golf School.
