How to Hit Short Golf Pitch Shots that Stop Fast

Hi, Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. I am at the Loggers Trail Golf Course in Stillwater, MN. Today I will show you how to hit a short pitch shot that will stop fast. Here is the step by step process. Start by selecting a wedge that has quite a lot of loft. I am using a 58-degree wedge. 56-degree, 58-degree, 60-degree or a lob wedge will all work fine for this shot. Position the ball so that it is more toward the front or target side foot. This position will help add loft to the shot. The hands are just about even with the ball as this hand position also creates quite a bit of loft. Do not move the hands ahead of the ball as this would deloft the club. In addition, increase that loft angle slightly by opening the face, tipping the toe of the club face back just a little bit. As the toe is tipped back readjust the stance to a little bit open. You may have to move back slightly to keep the ball forward in your stance. Slide your left hip and shoulder slightly toward the target in line over your left ankle. Now I am ready for the swing. Do not push at the ball with the arms or the hands. Rather, use the body. Pull with the hip and shoulder turn to move through the ball. Keep the loft angle of the club face consistent all the way through.

1. Address the ball with the ball forward in the stance.
2. Open the club face slightly.
3. Readjust, opening the stance and then positioning yourself so the ball remains forward in the stance.
4. Weight moves in line left.
5. Maintain the clubs loft angle while pulling through with the hip and shoulder turn.
You will hit a nice little soft shot that stops fast.
