Golf Takeaway for Consistency

The golf takeaway, sets the stage for a consistent golf swing. When the initial back swing movement is done properly it is much easier to hit consistently good golf shots. Here is a drill to experience the essentials for a correct takeaway the drill will give you the experience of correctly rotating perpendicular to your spine.

  1. Grip a club and extend your arms straight out in front of you level with the ground. Your club shaft will also be level with the ground. Now rotate your shoulders and hips in a backward and then forward motion.
  2. Get into your address position and practice turning your hips and shoulders in this rotational motion (per drill above).
  3. Practice allowing your arms and club to swing freely back and forward with this rotation. The club will initially travel along the target line established at address.
  4. Keep your wrists quiet. Your wrists will cock passively as a response to the rotational motion. This cocking motion will be very slight. It will feel as if the left wrist is cocking ever so slightly upward.
  5. Your left arm will stay in line with the top line of your shoulders. Your left arm will not cross below your shoulder line.
  6. When the club shaft is parallel with the ground the head of the club will be either even with your hands or slightly in front of your hands.

It is difficult to feel the correct position so visual feed back is essential. Get accurate feed back by using a video device or watch your self in a mirror.
