Golf Drill – Pulling Arms and Hands Through

by | Mar 20, 2019

Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. I am at the Cimarron Golf Resort here in Palm Springs, California. Today I will be talking about a three-stage drill that will help you swing with ease. This drill will give you the kinetic feel of pulling the arms and hands through the swing with ease. It will allow the club to whip through the ball with great power.

Basic Position: To begin, feet about 12 inches apart, grip the club and point the arms out in front. Cock the wrists, pointing the club straight up to the sky. Next, lay the club over to the backswing side. Turn the hips and shoulders back as much as you can. Now pull from the left side, pull through with the legs, hips and shoulders rotating around the spine. When the arms come around to the front of the body relax the wrist and let the club whip right in front of you.

The Drill – Pulling Arms and Hands Through
Stage 1: Refer to the process above: Perform the motion of the drill while standing in the upright position. Perform this motion several times to get the kinetic feel of the whip.

Stage 2: In this stage we will get into our address position. When we bow forward from the waist, the plane of the swing moves from being level or horizontal as in Stage one to the angle of a typical golf swing-swing plane. The key here is the angle of the arms and wrists remain the same as in the upright positions of Stage one. In the Stage two position the motion of the arms and hands moves down- toward the golf ball instead of out (in front – as in stage one). To practice this motion. Bow over from the waist keeping the club an inch or two off the ground, turn the hips and shoulders back as much as you can. Cock the wrists. Now pull from the left side, pull down and through with the legs, hips and shoulders rotating around the spine. Let the wrist go, relax the wrist and let the club whip right in front of you.

With Ball Stage 3: Practice with a golf ball. In this case I am in my full address position and the swing plane will be at its full swing angle. Remember the Basic Position of the arms, wrists and hands is the same no matter the plane of the swing. Get into address position. During the backswing, go up, turn the hips and shoulders as much as feasible. Let the wrists cock. During the downswing, pull down with hips and shoulders as they rotate down and back around the spine. Pull the arms and hands through the swing, with ease, relax the wrists and let them whip at the bottom.

This drill will give you the kinetic feel of pulling the arms and hands through the swing with ease. It will allow the club to whip through the ball with great power.
