Weight Transfer

Today I will talk about the transition or balanced weight transfer from the top of the back swing to the forward swing. Our goal is to get into (this position, see photo) to get weight centered on the front foot with the knee and hip in alignment at the point of impact. The athletic, balanced weight transfer that will create accuracy and power between club head and golf ball is much like a balanced walking step, except we are walking in place.

Balanced weight transfer in the golf swing

Balanced weight transfer in the golf swing means getting weight centered on the front foot with the knee and hip in alignment at the point of impact.

To try this concept, stand on your left or back foot and then shift your weight back toward the middle of your stance to then stand on the right or front foot. You will notice your body stays in balance as your weight moves foot to foot.
What I see a lot of people trying to do during the golf swing is slide with a lateral motion using the hips. The hips get out in front which creates a loss of power and inconsistent ball striking.
The correct motion is much more like stepping in place.
1. At address, your weight should be balanced, approximately centered equally over both feet.
2. At the top of the backswing, your balance point is over the right foot.
3. At impact, your balance point over your left foot, aligned with the knee and hip.
4. On the follow-through, the swing’s momentum should carry you to a balanced position, with almost all of your weight over your left foot.
